How the Programme Works
Our Universal Design for Learning (UDL) School Improvement Programme is designed to build sustainable inclusive practice through a combination of leadership development, whole-school professional learning, collaboration, and reflection. The programme follows a structured five-phase model, informed by research from Ireland and the UK which shows that the most effective professional development is ongoing, collaborative, and embedded in everyday school practice rather than delivered as a one-off event.
Developing UDL Leaders
Each school identifies three lead staff members to champion the project. These teachers participate in two days of training at a local Education Centre and complete either the ICEP Europe UDL Course or the AHEAD/UCD Digital UDL Badge. This phase develops internal expertise and leadership capacity within each school.
Whole-School Launch
At the beginning of the academic year, the lead team delivers a two-hour introductory UDL workshop to all staff. Prior to this, schools complete a Whole-School Strengths Audit which is used to identify existing inclusive practices and areas for development.
This ensures that each school's UDL journey is rooted in its own context and priorities.
Whole-Staff Professional Learning
During the year, all staff participate in two online Croke Park training events. These interactive sessions focus on UDL and other professional learning topics aligned with each school's improvement goals, helping staff translate theory into classroom practice.
Ongoing Development for Lead Teachers
Lead teachers engage in a further three days of training across the academic year. Sessions focus on:
- UDL principles and implementation
- Current educational themes
- Facilitation skills
- Leadership of school improvement projects
This sustained support reflects research highlighting the importance of coaching, collaboration, and continuous professional learning.
Sharing and Sustainability
The programme concludes with a Sharing Event, where schools present their learning, celebrate successes, and identify priorities for the following year.
This collaborative approach encourages professional networking and helps ensure that UDL becomes embedded as a long-term school improvement strategy.
